Case study: Water softeners in the Cloud

A manufacturer of water softeners wanted to be able to communicate with its devices via the Cloud. This manufacturer supplies its devices via dealers, some of which offer full-service contracts. The link with the Cloud server provides the usage data that can be used to optimally manage the service organisation.

This water softener manufacturer also wanted to offer end-users an App to consult and/or change the status of the equipment - which is often located in the basement or garage - from anywhere in the home.

For this customer E.D.&A. developed a new custom electronic controller with an integrated Wi-Fi module. The new controller and communication board is mechanically compatible, meaning it integrates perfectly into their existing equipment.

As regards the back-end software, this time we worked with a firm selected by the client that specialises in Cloud server applications. Communication between the electronic controller and the Cloud server is done using the IoT Rest protocol.

During the “IoT in practice” lecture programme at the Electronics & Applications 2019 trade fair in Utrecht, our colleague René Janssen used a case study entitled “Water softeners in the Cloud” to explain how successful IoT applications are being developed. On top of this, the issues of security and the use of cloud computing to operate IoT hardware were also addressed.
