Innovative solution integrates BLDC driver into the electronic controller.

The energy consumption of electronic devices is an increasingly important issue. For many years, E.D.&A. has focused on the development of innovative and energy-efficient electronic controllers.

E.D.&A. electronic controllers meet or surpass the requirements of the Energy Using Products (EUP) standards. These standards specify the maximum standby power consumption allowed by the European Commission.

AC motors versus BLDC motors

To meet the requirements imposed by these EUP standards, more and more E.D.&A. customers are opting for energy-efficient and durable brushless DC (BLDC) motors for their machines and equipment, instead of conventional AC motors. However, BLDC motors require a completely different type of control and the motor driver is often integrated into the motor.

BLDC driver integrated into the electronic controller

Through an innovative hardware and software solution, E.D.&A. now integrates a three-phase BLDC driver into the electronic controller. The commutation is done starting from a small, very low-cost microcontroller. E.D.&A. managed to fit everything on a single PCB, making this BLDC motor solution no more expensive than alternative approaches.

Solution for a wide range of applications

E.D.&A. has already applied this concept to drive a 300W / 24V three-phase BLDC motor for the agricultural sector. It is necessary that the motor starts up in a controlled way via a certain speed profile after the apparatus, and thus the PCB, has rotated by a specific angle. The real-time motor current of each phase is measured to enable detection of any motor stalling, which results in a reversal of the motor direction.

Naturally, this innovative hardware/software concept can be used in a wide variety of applications to drive three-phase BLDC motors.
