Matter, the overarching Smart Home standard.

What is Matter?

'Matter' is an open-source connectivity standard for smart home appliances and IoT (Internet of Things) devices. It is designed to improve interoperability and compatibility between different manufacturers and always provides local control as an option.

Matter acts as a kind of translator allowing smart devices to talk to each other. Imagine buying a ventilation system from brand A and a smart thermostat from brand B. With Matter, you no longer have to worry about whether these products are compatible with each other. Matter provides a common 'language' to make smart home products from different manufacturers work better and safely together, regardless of brand. E.D.&A. implements for its customers -if desired- Matter on the electronic controllers of their smart home applications. The benefits are numerous.

Why Matter?

The aim of Matter is to simplify the development of smart home products for manufacturers, while increasing product compatibility for consumers. It is based on the Internet Protocol (IP) and operates through one or more compatible border routers, avoiding the use of multiple proprietary hubs.

Matter products operate locally and are independent of an internet connection (after commissioning), although the standard is designed to communicate easily with the cloud. Without an internet connection, you still manage and control your devices.

Easy set-up is also an asset for the end user of the Matter product in this regard. Through the network the device uses, it will automatically connect to Matter (after scanning the QR code). No more app from the device manufacturer is needed for the installation process.

The Matter protocol was developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), formerly known as the Zigbee Alliance, and is supported by major players in the tech industry, including Apple, Google, and Amazon and several other smarthome device manufacturers. It works on existing networking technologies such as Ethernet, WiFi and Thread.

Demo: E.D.&A. shows thermostat controller with Matter

From smart lights, ventilation systems to thermostats, Matter makes sure they can all communicate with each other.

At the MCE 2024 trade fair in Milan (12-15 March 2024), E.D.&A. will reveal  a custom-made thermostat controller with Matter. By way of example, visitors can read and change the temperature of this Matter thermostat via the Google Home app (Google Nest Hub).

It does MATTER!
