Good speed Maersk Baltimore! (August 2006)

On 21st June 2006, the ship “MAERSK BALTIMORE” was officially christened in the Volkswerft Stralsund GmbH in Germany. This gigantic container ship can load more than 4.000 containers. It is a so-called PANMAX ship: it is just able to sail through the Panama Canal.

The read-out of the fuel consumption is achieved by using a V5-1000 HPC® with a touch screen operating interface.

The ship has a (68MW) main engine and four auxiliary engines for the production of electricity (each 1.7MW). The fuel must be heated to 130°C to be sufficiently fluid for the engines. In delivering the fuel at a constant pressure and flow to the engine, part of the heated fuel will always flow back into the storage tank. The fuel that flows back must be subtracted from the total use.

Flow meters and temperature sensors are placed at three points along the fuel pipes. These are digital pulse inputs and PT100 inputs for the V5-1000 HPC®. The total consumption, the consumption of the auxiliary engines and the flow back of fuel is measured. The consumption of the main engine is calculated by the V5-1000 HPC®.

The consumption and temperature of the fuel can be read at various points along the circuit on the display of the E.D.&A-controller. This data is also logged, so that the consumption of the past 24 hours or the last sailing can be called up.

From a 4..20mA analogue output, the current consumption of the main engine is passed through to the ship’s central computer. The computer calculates from the collected data, together with a lot of other measurements, the optimal speed of the ship.
