Bridgestone and E.D.&A.: already 20 years of cooperation (July 2008)

An airplane tire can be used for 250 to 3000 flights. Afterwards they have to be renovated. Bridgestone Belgium has been specializing in the renovation of airplane tires. All known European airline companies have their tires renewed by this establishment of Bridgestone. Bridgestone also produces the renovation machines for tires for the other establishments of Bridgestone.

They scrape off the rubber surface and afterwards replace it with other layers of rubber. During an hour and a half the tire is pressed against the side of a matrix. Steam heats up this matrix until it reaches a high temperature. All these operations have been executed for 20 years by means of the electronic controllers of E.D.&A..

At the arrival Bridgestone screens the tires. Each tire has a serial number and the number of renovations. A tire can go through max. 4 renewals. All the information including a “test” picture of the tire (“before” and “after” the renovation) is kept in a data base.

Yearly Bridgestone renews about 90.000 airplane tires with the help of E.D.&A.-controllers. Airplane tires are much stronger and more durable than regular car tires. The airplane tires have to endure abnormal circumstances. The temperature can differ from +120°C (during take off and landing) to -60°C (high in the air). When the airplane is landing, the tire must directly obtain 250km/h and has to be able to stand still within 1500 metres. The tire needs to carry 250 times its own weight (a car tire max. 50 times). The maintenance of such a tire is extremely important.
